Twisting jasmine
embracing giant oak branches, brass band rhythms, and the malleable nature of Louisiana clay all find their way into
the form and surfaces of these ceramic sculptures. This series reflects a progression from the Shrine Series. Enclosed
interior space becomes open space within the body of the sculpture. Rooms become abstracted negative shapes. Many forms possess the symmetry and reductive approach of West African figurative sculpture. These
large organic forms range from three to four feet high. As contemporary sculpture these work make small revolutionary
acts. Fired clay, acrylic paint and wax pencil marks push the craft of ceramics into subtle uses of mixed media. As
a progression, each sculpture breaks the rules of the previous work. Expanding a shared territory of organic form and
layered surface treatment.
